Why CHOOSE a Vision driven life?

Why is declaring a Vision so vital?

By Betsy A. Haas, MA

Have You Ever Asked Yourself Any of These Questions?

What is the purpose of my life?

Why am I here?

Where am I going?

How come I feel out of sorts?

Life is full of peaks and valleys. When you’re in the valley, you might not see the value of it until later when you look back and realize all you’ve learned. That all by yourself you are a complete and perfect creation. A person with a purpose! The journey it takes to discover that purpose is the difference between making a living and making a life. If you don’t know your purpose, then discover the reason you are on this planet! Knowing who you are and what you are meant to be gives you the energy you need to create the life that makes you happy. You will know instantly when you discover your purpose as your smiles will be big and bright and the authenticity of your value will be a natural part of your daily existence. Your experience of you and the world around you will be absolutely one of beauty!

Keep in mind always the present you are constructing. It should be the future you want. Alice Walker

Many of us have been brainwashed into thinking that having a beautiful home, a high-powered job or immense wealth is the only true definition of success. This might work for some people, but fortunately we don’t all fit the same mold. Likely or not what works for others often leaves us feeling frustrated and sad because we’re not really doing what we enjoy. Don’t believe me? Just look the lives of some of the world’s most successful people. Walt Disney wanted to make people happy. Mother Theresa wanted to care and comfort the poor. Their success was achieved because they discovered the joy of having a definite purpose in life.

A vision without a task is a dream;
A task without a vision is drudgery;
A vision and a task is the hope for the world. Donald Reeves

So, What Is a Vision and How Do I Get One?

A vision is a guiding image of success formed in terms of a contribution to society. If a strategic plan is the “blueprint” for your work, then the vision is the “artist’s rendering” of the achievement of that plan. It is a description in words that conjures up a similar picture for life.

There is one universal rule of planning: You will never be greater than the vision that guides you. No Olympic athlete ever got to the Olympics by mistake; a compelling vision of his or her stellar performance inevitably guides all the sweat and tears for many years. The vision statement requires you to stretch your expectations, aspirations, and performance. Without that powerful, attractive, valuable vision, why bother?

The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams. Eleanor Roosevelt

As they say, “watch and learn” even though we’re all dealing with our own issues, everyone we meet has something to teach us. If a person exasperates you and causes you to blow your top, then you probably needed to work on patience. That’s why it’s imperative that we create our own measure of success and then develop a personal strategy to achieve it. Being careful not to confuse our purpose in life with our personal goals. Although goals are crucial to achieving any kind of success, left alone they can become empty and undirected. You may set hundreds of goals, in a lifetime, but there is only one true purpose in life and that purpose should be the underlying core that gives your goals direction and meaning.

A vision statement should be realistic and credible, well articulated and easily understood, appropriate, ambitious, and responsive to change. It should orient your energies in a direction and serve as a guide to action. It should be consistent with your values. In short, a vision should challenge and inspire you to achieve your mission. Vision is the WHAT and mission is the HOW.

All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them. Walt Disney

Remember, no one is more important, worthy or special than you. You have talents that no one else can offer. There is a special goodness and love in you. Never treat your own emotional, mental, physical and spiritual health as an afterthought. Instead make your own well being a priority because it is truly YOU that makes THE difference!
